Hey Clay! is the Crafts Council’s national celebration of clay – giving everyone the chance to unleash their inner potter. Now in its sixth year, Hey Clay! has become hugely popular and much loved among audiences as it gives them the chance to do something they wouldn’t normally do.
How many bricks can you make in a day?! Join us on site at Brickfield, our experimental community brickworks set in the extra-ordinary manmade lunar landscape of a disused china clay pit in St Austell. We will teach you the satisfying and accessible process of brick making by hand. Workshops involve making a clay mix from waste materials from the china clay industry, kneading or ‘wedging’ clay and throwing it into wooden brick moulds and then knocking out the bricks to dry.
Back in the day at local brickworks around clay country the lads would make up to 90 bricks per hour! 90 bricks a day would be a record for us! Let’s give it our best shot!
Workshops start at 10.30am and finish at 4.00pm. There will be clay mixing and brickmaking demos at 10.30am and 1.30pm. Join us for a couple of hours or all day if you’ve got the brickmaking bug and want to help us hit our target!
All the bricks we make will be dried and fired on site in the summer. We don’t know what we’re going to make with them yet. So let us know your ideas.
